Audio conversion changes the container, codec, sample format, or a combination of all three. Pick the output according to where the file must play, not just which extension looks familiar.
MP3, WAV, and other audio formats
MP3 is a compressed format built for small files and broad playback support. WAV commonly stores uncompressed PCM audio, making files larger but easier to edit. AAC and Opus can provide efficient compression, while FLAC compresses without discarding audio data. A filename extension identifies the container or format, but the codec inside determines whether a browser can decode it.
Convert a permitted file in the browser
Open the Audio Converter, choose a browser-supported local audio file, verify its duration and channel information, and export WAV. To pull an audio track from a video first, use Video to Audio. To shorten an existing audio file, use the Audio Cutter and export only the selected range.
This is not a universal transcoder. Browser codec support varies, and the tools do not encode MP3 or FLAC output.
Pull audio out of a video first
- Use a local video you created or may process.
- Check that it plays in the same browser.
- Extract the audio as WAV.
- Listen for silence, clipping, or an incorrect channel.
- Use a dedicated encoder later if your destination requires MP3.
Choose quality settings deliberately
Changing a lossy file to WAV does not restore missing detail; it only avoids another lossy encoding step. Repeated MP3 conversions can add artifacts. Keep the highest-quality permitted source as your master, edit from that copy, and create smaller delivery files at the end.
Why a file may fail
The browser may not support the source codec, the file may be damaged, or the device may not have enough memory for a long recording. Try a current desktop browser, confirm the source plays normally, and process shorter sections. Password protection and digital rights controls are not bypassed.
