Flipping and rotating solve different image problems. Rotation changes orientation by turning the picture; flipping reflects it across a horizontal or vertical axis.
Flip versus rotate
A horizontal flip mirrors the image from left to right. It is useful for changing the direction a subject faces or correcting a mirrored camera image. A vertical flip reflects the image from top to bottom. Rotation turns the whole canvas by 90 degrees at a time and is the right fix for a sideways or upside-down photo.
These operations do not crop or straighten a tilted horizon. They also do not preserve readable text during a flip: letters, logos, road signs, and product labels become mirrored with the rest of the picture.
How to flip or rotate an image online
- Open the Image Rotate and Flip tool.
- Select an image from your device and inspect its current orientation.
- Use Rotate Left or Rotate Right for a 90-degree turn.
- Use Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical only when you want a reflection.
- Preview the result, then download the finished PNG.

Why a photo can appear sideways
Phones and cameras may store pixels in one direction and add orientation metadata that tells software how to display them. Some websites ignore that metadata, so a photo looks correct on the phone but sideways after upload. Rotating and exporting creates a new image whose pixel layout matches the visible orientation, which is often more dependable across older software.
Choose the right flip direction
- Horizontal: mirror left and right, reverse a selfie preview, or redirect a subject within a layout.
- Vertical: reflect top and bottom for a deliberate design effect.
- Rotate: correct portrait and landscape orientation without mirroring the content.
If the image contains a known asymmetrical object, use it to confirm that the result is not accidentally reversed.
Check the exported image
