An image file extension identifies the format used to store the picture, but it does not tell you that one format is always higher quality than another. The right choice depends on editing, transparency, animation, compatibility, and file size.
File extension versus image format
The letters after the final period in a filename, such as .jpg or .png, are the file extension. They normally indicate the encoding and structure inside the file. Renaming photo.jpg to photo.png changes only the filename; it does not convert the pixels into PNG. Use an image editor or converter and then verify the exported file.
JPEG files commonly use either .jpg or .jpeg. Those extensions refer to the same general format. Applications may also use less common variants, but changing an unfamiliar extension without understanding the underlying data can make the file harder to open.
Common raster image file types
- JPG or JPEG: compact lossy compression for photographs and complex scenes; no transparency.
- PNG: lossless compression, sharp flat-color graphics, and full alpha transparency; often larger for photos.
- WebP: lossy or lossless compression with transparency and animation support in modern web workflows.
- GIF: a limited-color format best known for simple animation; not a high-quality photo format.
- AVIF: modern compression with strong size efficiency, but workflow support should be checked before delivery.
- HEIC or HEIF: efficient phone-camera storage with compatibility that varies by browser and application.
- TIFF: a flexible high-quality container used in scanning, print, and archival workflows; files can be large.
- BMP: a simple bitmap format with broad historical support and usually inefficient web file sizes.
Vector, RAW, and project files
SVG stores shapes, paths, and text as vector instructions, so suitable artwork can scale without pixelation. SVG is useful for icons, logos, and diagrams, but it can contain active or external content and should be sanitized before untrusted files are published. EPS, AI, and some PDF files can also contain vector artwork, although support depends on specialist software.
Camera RAW extensions such as CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, and DNG preserve sensor-oriented data for editing. PSD, XCF, and similar project formats can retain layers and editing state. These are valuable master files, but they are not usually the final format for a website, email, or social upload.
Is PNG or JPG higher quality?
PNG does not use JPEG-style lossy compression, so it preserves exact decoded pixels and sharp graphic edges. That does not automatically make every PNG look better. A high-resolution, carefully compressed JPG can be the practical choice for a photograph, while converting a damaged JPG to PNG cannot restore missing detail. For logos, screenshots, diagrams, and transparency, PNG is often the safer choice.

Choose an image extension for the destination
- Check which formats the destination explicitly accepts.
- Decide whether transparency, animation, layers, or future editing must be preserved.
- Resize dimensions to the largest size the destination actually needs.
- Export a copy in the selected format and inspect text, edges, gradients, faces, and transparent areas.
- Compare file size only after confirming that the visual result is acceptable.
