What is PDF metadata?
PDF metadata includes fields like Author, Creator, Producer, Title, Subject, Keywords, CreationDate, and ModDate. This data is stored in the PDF info dictionary and is visible in document properties. It can reveal the software used to create the file, the author's name, and editing history.
Common reasons to clear PDF metadata include protecting privacy before sharing documents, removing internal tool references from client deliverables, and preventing accidental exposure of author identities in anonymous submissions. How to delete metadata from a PDF
Upload the PDF using the file picker above. The tool reads the PDF structure using PDF.js, displays the current metadata, and lets you choose which fields to clear. Click "Remove Metadata and Download" to produce a clean PDF with the selected fields removed.
The output preserves the original PDF content, formatting, and embedded fonts. Only the info dictionary fields you selected are cleared. For images embedded in the PDF, use the Image Metadata Remover to strip EXIF data separately.
What PDF metadata can reveal
PDF metadata may include the document title, author name, creation date, software used, modification history, and sometimes organization-specific fields. Removing metadata is useful before sharing drafts, public downloads, client documents, or files created on a personal device. It does not remove visible text, comments burned into pages, hidden text layers, or information shown in the document itself.
After cleaning a PDF, open the exported copy and inspect document properties in your PDF viewer. If the file contains scanned pages, also check the visible image content.
