Turn a photo into a pixelated image

Whole-image mode reduces visible detail into square color blocks. Increase the block size for a stronger low-resolution effect or use smaller blocks to preserve more of the original shapes. The result can resemble pixel art, but it is a raster pixelation effect rather than a hand-drawn sprite or palette-managed pixel-art conversion.

Selected-region mode is intended for masking part of a screenshot or photo. Pixelation may still reveal shapes and context, so enlarge the selected area and review the exported PNG before sharing sensitive material.

When pixelation is the safer edit

Pixelate Image is built for privacy-first edits: hiding faces, license plates, usernames, addresses, order numbers, signatures, screenshots, or any area that should not remain readable. Unlike blur, pixelation is visibly destructive, which makes it clearer to viewers that sensitive information was intentionally masked.

Use selected-region mode for screenshots and photos where only one area needs protection. Use whole-image mode for stylized thumbnails, abstract backgrounds, or images that should be recognizable only by color and layout. For metadata privacy, also run the file through Image Metadata Remover before sharing.

Block size and review tips

Small blocks preserve more of the original shape, while larger blocks hide detail more aggressively. If text is still readable after pixelating, increase the block size or select a slightly larger area. For faces and documents, zoom out and check the image at the size where it will be published.
